Celebrating the life of
Ruth Anna Green Elmore
January 11, 1920 - September 21, 2008
Ruth Anna Green Elmore, 88, died peacefully from heart failure on September 21, 2008 in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she was living in an assisted care facility near her daughter, Mrs. Fran Barry.
Ruth was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on January 11, 1920, to parents James Jacob Green and Kathryn Brogan Green, their only child. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Hygiene in 1941 and moved to Washington D.C. where she met and married her loving husband, Francis Bizzell Elmore Jr. of Savannah, Georgia, in 1942. After World War II, they made Savannah their permanent home where they proudly raised four successful children and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 1, 1992. Husband Francis died that following December following a long illness.
Their beloved children are Mrs. Fran Barry and husband Bob of Raleigh, North Carolina, Mrs. Regina Gallwas and husband Gary of Tacoma, Washington, Mr. Roger Elmore and wife Jeanne of Woodbridge, Virginia, and Mrs. Sally Smith and husband Lyn of Bluffton, South Carolina. She was blessed with seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Ruth was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was also a devout Catholic and member of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah which her family called their second home. Ruth also worked part-time as a dental hygienist for thirty years with Dr. Hohenstein and Drs. Black, Howard and Dunn. On her days off Ruth enjoyed playing golf with friends and family and was a member of the Savannah Women's Golf Association. She was also a member of the King's Daughters chapter in Savannah, the Savannah Newcomer's Club, and a lifelong member of the Gordonston Garden Club which honored her and other original members several years ago. Her family and friends will remember her as an avid reader, bridge player, and dabbling artist who continued attending college classes during her retirement years. She also loved the local waters of the Low Country where her family spent many memorable summers. After raising their children, Ruth and Francis enjoyed retirement traveling the country and the world visiting family members.
Visitation: 5:00-7:oo PM Tuesday at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Wednesday at 10:00 AM with internment at the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
Remembrances may be sent to the Little Sisters of the Poor in Savannah.
Almighty and eternal God, in whose hands are life and death, we come into Your presence to plead for all who mourn Ruth. Even Your Son was moved to weep over the death of His friend Lazarus, so we know that You are touched by the tears of those who grieve over the loss of dear ones. In Your divine providence fill the aching void in their hearts with Your comforting presence, and wipe all the tears from their eyes. Source of all consolation, raise them up with the hope in Christ. Reassure them of the eternal reunion in Your presence with their beloved, whom You have called to eternal peace and immeasurable joy in heaven. In their loneliness draw them closer to You. O Lord, cause the sorrow of separation to make the survivors more understanding of the grief of others and more ready to comfort them in their needs. We ask this in the name of Jesus, who died that we might live forever, Amen.

Ruth was one of the first bridge player that I met when I first came to Savanna in 1983. I joined the Savannah Newcomers and was very active in all aspects, as was Ruth. We played bridge together monthly until she moved back to Pa. She will be missed by all of her Savannah Friends.
